Summer will be here before you know it, here’s some advice to guide you to the body of your dreams!

First start by carving some time out for yourself, the morning is a good time before the kids get up or before you go to work. At this time of day there’s no interruptions and no excuses not to exercise even it’s only 15-20 minutes. Remember exercise is a stress relief, we all we need someway to channel our frustrations and what better way on yourself and not your children. It’s really not rocket science to make changes in your body, its consistency and will power to succeed.

15- 30 minutes a day 4 times a week performing total body strength training exercises and cardio at a moderate intensity 2-3 times a week is more than enough to change your body and life around.

I truly believe the missing link to a healthier, trim, toned body is obviously eating healthy portion sizes but most of all adding strength training consistently in to your workout schedule.

WHY, you might ask?

Starting at around age 30 women who don’t participate in some kind of strength training generally will lose approximately 6.6 pounds of lean muscle mass every 10 years. Your total body composition will change gaining more fat especially around the midsection which as women we tend to store surplus fat here. This has a negative effect on your metabolism slowing the pace at which we burn calories and fat. The more lean muscle mass we have the more calories we burn at rest, imagine every pound of muscle on your body burns between 30 and 50 calories a day–even when you’re sleeping. Compare this to fat which burns zero amounts of calories.

Muscles keep your body efficiently burning fat, think of muscles like a fire, they constantly need fuel to keep a light. Women often blame their weight problems on a sluggish slow metabolism but often it’s due to their lack of muscle. All of us have been programmed to think, in order to lose weight we need to starve our poor bodies and do endless hours of cardio. Unfortunately the body can’t run on an un-sufficient amount of nutrients and calories. It will eventually start to burn what little muscle you have left, further feeding into the problem to which you started to exercise in the first place.

Have you ever heard a friend say? “I don’t understand, I workout the same as I did in my 20’s and I can’t stop gaining weight” or “ No I can’t lift weights I bulk up too easy” .

I personally hear that ALL the time and when they finally place their trust in me and see results this will change their life forever not only physically but mentally.

Step Up do an amazing program for under privileged kids. I had the honnor of teaching them some exercise classes last Saturday in down town LA sponsored by Crystal Light. What a true inspiration they are, so young and in need of guidence. We try to teach them that It’s Ok, if you’re not a size 2. It’s about being kind to the body you have and making the right choices.

Obesity is a rising epedemic we need to teach our children that exercise is fun. First it must start with us, they learn from example. Start to make family activities such as biking, playing sports or just by going for a family hike. The whole family will benefit and it’s a great way to spend some good family time.
