Tracey Mallet's 3-in-1 Pregnancy System

Reviewer: Cheryl King - Star-Telegram Staff Writer
Aimed at: Women in all stages of pregnancy

Host: Dancer and fitness professional Tracey Mallett

The workout: Uses pilates and yoga, with 20-minute sessions on lower body, upper body and posture, and stretches you can do with your partner, plus some abdominal and pelvic-floor exercises that promote stretching and relaxing.

Difficulty: Even I could do these wonderfully relaxing moves, or at least some of them.

Other perks: The best part of this video is that the host is pregnant, in her third trimester, and very pleasant. She has a nonpregnant helper who demonstrates all the exercises to full capacity, and Mallett demonstrates the exercises at a level appropriate for women in their second or third trimester, so there is flexibility in the workout.

Confession: I cheated ... a lot (but again, I blame that on being in my first trimester and feeling miserable).

The bottom line: I would highly recommend this one. When I reach the dreamy second trimester, I will try this workout again, and I'm confident I will enjoy it.

3 in 1 Patented Pregnancy System

Reviewer: Kimberly Garrison - The Philadelphia Daily News

Medical experts agree that exercise provides numerous benefits to a pregnant woman and her developing fetus. Mallet's carefully designed program is an amazing three-in-one pilates, yoga and strength-training routine to help the expectant mother build a beautiful body and baby, too.

Great prenatal DVDs

Reviewer: Julie Deardorff - The Chicago Tribune

Mallett's DVD, a workout she personally did three times a week, combines the core pelvic floor conditioning of Pilates with the flexibility and stress release of yoga. She also includes strength training and enlists her husband in a partner-stretching segment. This video can also be used by Pilates newbies and postpartum to help tone a flabby midsection.

Tracy Mallett Fitness: 3-in-1 Pregnancy System

Reviewer: ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Monday, Nov. 20 2006

The truth is, this is a good fusion workout designed and directed at women in their second or third trimesters. Mallett does the moves for those women while a friend does modifications for everyone else. But because Mallett is leading the video, most of the focus is on the moves she's doing.

The video is divided into four segments:

  • Abdominal and pelvic floor: This 20-minute segment features only a few ab exercises. Most of the time is spent doing side-lying leg exercises.
  • Lower body: You do some squats and moves for balance in this 14-minute portion.
  • Upper body: You use light dumbbells to challenge your upper body in this 13-minute segment.
  • Partnered stretching: Mallett teams up with her husband, Chris Mallett, a physical therapist, to offer stretches you can do with your husband or a friend. The moves are creative, and this workout could offer a nice way for the dad to get involved in the mother's health. They actually could have made a separate video building on this 12-minute segment.

For the moves, pregnant women will need pillows, a blanket, a chair and dumbbells. Everyone else can get by with just the dumbbells.

Mallett, an endearing and knowledgeable instructor

Fitness video review: A few rise above the tier of tired ideas

Reviewer: Richard Seven - The Seattle Times

With cold weather coming, you probably are more likely to stay home and pop in a fitness video than venture outside.

But each video has a definite shelf life. You get sick of the same routines and the same congratulating leader (even when you are slacking). So you seek a new one. The good news is that plenty of new videos are on the market. The bad news is that not much seems really new.

Here are a few (of dozens out there) that strike different chords. More videos these days are mindful that you are too busy or too preoccupied with this or that “trouble spot,” or too prone to become bored if they let you change things up. Some have done a good job meeting those needs.

Remember, you can find deals on Amazon.com and other Web sites. Also, consider borrowing from a friend to see whether the tone and pace are right for you.

GET READY

“Pregnancy System 3 in 1” ($19.98) by Tracey Mallett fuses Pilates and yoga to help women get through delivery. Pilates targets the abdominal muscles, and yoga relaxes and increases flexibility.

While a very pregnant Mallett leads viewers through movements, with such props as pillows to aid her, an assistant shows the standard movements. As you can imagine, this a very muted video but one you might want to check out and pass along to a pregnant friend when you’re ready for something more difficult.

Mallett is a fitness expert and dancer, so she knows what she is teaching.

Not for Pregnant Women Only:

Reviewer: Joanne Eglash - eDiets.com
No, I’m not pregnant, but I do like variety in my fitness routines. Not only does it add pizzazz to an otherwise plain Jane workout, but varying your workouts actually improves your level of fitness.

I  recommend Tracey Mallett’s Pregnancy 3 in 1. A combination of Pilates, yoga and strength training, it offers a soothing yet thorough experience. If you are pre or post-natal, be sure to check with your physician first before beginning the program.

Tracy Mallett Fitness: 3-in-1 Pregnancy System" by Tracy Mallett (Razor Digital Entertainment, $19.99).

Reviewer: Alexa Stanard - The Detroit News
Mallett brings her Pilates expertise and pregnancy experience to bear in her "3-in-1" pregnancy fitness program. The DVD includes routines for those preparing to get pregnant, those who are pregnant and postpartum women. It offers movements that target upper body, core and lower body. Finally, it provides three types of exercise routine: Pilates, yoga and strength training, aimed to improve flexibility and posture and help control weight.

The exercise video for women who don't excercise.

Reviewer: Jennifer L. Richardson
I think I am fairly healthy, I walk to work everyday and I am not overweight but I would NEVER go to the gym. I don't like to "workout" but I wanted my baby to be healthy. I picked this video after trying several from the library. I put it in just to see what it was like. The woman leading it was so friendly and encouraging that I thought "I could do that" and before I knew it I was no longer sitting on the couch watching but actually finishing the workout. I didn't get all sweaty; there is no hoping around or kicking your legs in the air. It focuses mainly on stretching and toning, parts of it I still can't do fully but I keep working on it. I felt very safe the whole time, never wobbly or like I might fall. I would highly recommend this to any pregnant women looking for a workout video.

Good variety, low impact workout

Reviewer: S. Winder (Farmington Hills, Michigan USA)
I bought this for my wife, who is a fan of Callanetics, pilates, yoga, etc. She enjoyed the workout, because it retains elements of her favorite exercises but modifies or omits the parts that would be difficult or detrimental during pregnancy.

During her first time watching the video, I heard her say "Wow, that feels really good" several times, even to some of the exercises that looked a little bit pointless to me. This is definitely tailored to the pregnant woman, but I found that I was able to see some benefit from most of the exercises as well (I should point out that I reserve exercise for special occasions).

I especially like the partner-assisted workout, as it gave me a chance to help my wife with some range-of-motion exercises. I also liked the relaxed atmosphere and home setting. It feels professionally done, but not sterile.

Research states that exercise is essential for the health of the soon to be mother and baby, the 3-in-1 Pregnancy System™ has great safe exercises to keep the core and especially the pelvic floor muscles strong. I believe regular core stabilization and flexibility training can dramatically decrease complications such as Incontinence after child birth, because of this I recommend the Pregnancy System to patients and friends.

As an OB-GYN Nurse Practitioner, I encourage my pregnant patients to be active during their pregnancies, for their own health, and for the health of their baby. The 3-in-1 Pregnancy System™ provides an effective and, most importantly, safe workout for women before, during and after pregnancy. Tracey’s instructions and demonstrations of Pilates and Yoga exercise are clear and easy to follow, whether you are new to these routines or experienced in working out with Pilates, as I am. I feel comfortable in recommending the 3-in-1 Pregnancy System™ to my patients as an excellent addition to their pregnancy care.

Tracey Mallett’s video is a fabulous way to maintain fitness during pregnancy. It is also a great way to resume exercise after delivery. The modifications she provides makes it suitable and safe for a wide range of fitness levels. Her emphasis on correcting postural changes that occur during pregnancy through specific strengthening and flexibility exercises can help ease back pain, a common complaint. I would recommend the 3-in-1 Pregnancy System™ to any women who wants to follow a safe exercise routine during her prenatal and postpartum months.

Proud Mother of Two

I was having hip and lower back pain during my pregnancy, but then I started to do the 3-in-1 Pregnancy System™ with Pilates. These exercises strengthened my core which in turn helped to relieve pain. I was amazed on how strong I began to feel only after a few workouts. This new found strength helped me to cope with my ever changing body. It improved my posture and flexibility. I was able to continue with the DVD until the delivery of the baby. After giving birth with a caesarean delivery, I was surprised how great I felt. I swear it was from the core strength and overall conditioning I had developed from the Pregnancy System.
